Detective, Historian, Storyteller: The Arts of the Biographer with Nathan Hobby

A biographer needs many hats – detective, unearthing sources that reveal a life more fully; historian, analysing and putting these sources into context; and storyteller, weaving it all into a compelling narrative. This workshop introduces these roles of the biographer and gives practical tips and exercises to help you develop your skills.

Nathan Hobby is writing a biography of the Australian novelist, Katharine Susannah Prichard, as a PhD candidate at the University of Western Australia. A chapter from the biography has appeared in Westerly. His novel, The Fur, won the T.A.G. Hungerford Award and is published by Fremantle Press. He writes about biography and other things on his blog, ‘A Biographer in Perth’, at www.nathanhobby.com
